We used to catch them by feeling for them very carefully with our feet. We used to go for the females as their eggs are a delicacy. However, it has to clean in a particular way to avoid getting poisoned.

I seen a horshue crab that look EXACTLY like that one. Believe it or not I found it on the BEACH! Also in Saugus witch makes it more surprising. The one I found is about like 4 of the one you found, mine had a brown shell and with a lined lump instead of a regular lump. The inside looked exactly the same except for the tail.

@Robin Cook Exactly. It’s not poisonous, but just like a needle, it can give a really painful wound if not handle correctly. Their pincers are not as sharp though, since they use it to hold onto tiny molluscs.

Except for the sand flea lol. He said ”all fleas bite” but these aren't fleas, they're actually crustaceans. Just like the horseshoe ”crab” isn't a crab at all :) and they do not bite, I used to play with them when I lived on the beach as a smol. They are only called ”sand fleas” because of the jumping, they are not parasites. They actually feed on decaying seaweed and plant matter, as they were doing in the vid.
Edit because I mistakenly wrote they were crabs instead of crustaceans lol

I don't think it stung me, there was no swelling or heat or burning feeling around the cut. pretty sure its tail broke off when it cut me because i found a dead horseshoe crab washed up with no tail and a caved-in head a few min later. still feel bad about it.

One time I was looking for a detached stingray barb, and found a horseshoe crab tail. I thought it was perfect, and I pulled it out of the sand, and a fully sized, live horseshoe crab jumped out and started crawling over me. One of the most surreal but coolest experiences of my life.

Coyote, I have a question. Do those sand fleas cause infections to human feet? reason I ask is because I saw those African videos of a doctor helping patients with these pus filled pimples caused by a insect. Do sand fleas cause that?

When I was little I actually did get stuck by that tail in the ankle. It left a pretty nice sized hole but other than that the tail is harmless. When things get to close they flick that tail as a scare tactic and accidental sticks can happen.

Horseshoe crabs are really common along the North Shore of Long Island, near the shores of the beaches of the Long Island Sound. I used to see them, and even pick them up, often as a kid. they never harmed me, but they always bewildered me.
It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized they were arachnids!! Fascinating creatures!!

I just so happened to run into one while on the beach at Prudence Island, I was talking about them to my mom and her friend. It came up in the shallows and I screamed for 0 reason, because I didn’t know that they didn’t sting before that lmao. He was actually very cute and immediately just turned away when he saw me, it’s even cuter because you can’t see their legs so they look like they just glide across the floor :]

Interesting. When I was a kid going to Long Beach Island in New Jersey we'd see these every summer sitting on a little beach on the bay side of the island. Lots of them. But I've never seen them anywhere else. Obviously a good concentration of them in that bay. I just learned from this vid that they were there for mating season. Ah, summer romance...

Always flip a horshecrab upside down when putting in the water!!!!! Air bubbles build up in the book gills when you put them in regularly. Make sure you're knowledgeable before interacting with animals!

"Sand fleas" or talitridae, despite their name, are not fleas. They do not bite.
They are also called landhoppers and sandhoppers.
