On this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote finds an extremely blue and quite possibly new species of Crayfish!
While adventuring in the back hills of West Virginia with herpetologist Tim Brust the team set their sites on encountering this rare mountain gem by sifting through rock outcrops where water seeps pour out of the mountainside.
Unlike most crayfish species these live underground and not in the mountain streams and rivers like many of their cousins. However finding them is much easier said than done.
So will the team help researchers in their discovery of this new creature?
Get ready to find out!
HUGE THANKS to Tim Brust of ESI for all of his help in making this episode possible. And an extra special THANKS to Dr. Zac Loughman of West Liberty University for his help in describing this new species.

*Mark*: Is it blue?
Classic mark
Lol
NO ITS PURPLE
Coyote: no it’s pink 😐
I absolutely love how enthusiastic he is about these animals ❤️❤️
Dude your such a inspiration to me. I watch you all the time and your really educating. It makes me happy learn about animals I didn't even know existed! Love your content man be brave stay wild 😔👊
Nice comment and true…definitely my fav youtuber!
It's been 4 years since the discovery and I wonder: *Was it called Sapphire Crayfish?*
@Queen Medusa no it has multiple names and sapphire cray fish is one of them so is everglades crayfish, and electric blue crayfish
@Emily Brackett it is
@Queen Medusa that's not creative at all. I like what Coyote called it way better! Even though it wasn't scientifically correct.
As far as I'm aware, no. It's just called a blue crayfish, unfortunately.
@Philip Tucker I highly doubt it, but maybe? It would be a great name for it?
Everyone in quarantine: rushes to coyotes old videos*
Ofc :P
Facts XD
True lol
Yes lol
Lol true
When I was a little kid, my brothers and I found a blue crayfish here in Ontario, Canada. It was beautiful! Is it a different species? Could it have been this type too?
I've seen blue lobsters too, not in person but I have seen pics of them.
Blue crayfish and by that extent, all miscolored claw bois are rare occurances during breeding. They're rare because they can often be created from inbreeding and due to their colorations, they may not survive long enough to make the species abundant enough.
Hey!we live in the same province
hey nice from the same province and I love nature too. was this south north or mid way?
That was a life lesson. Sometimes the hardest things to lift or the hardest challenges turn out to pay off in the end
@Chaan R It's all about adventure. Going such places doesn't even come close to encountering the species in wild.
@Chaan R new species
It doesn't make any sense.
They could just go to an aquatic place office and you can see a blue crayfish. Why go there ?
6:48 that crestacian has extremely beautiful eyes!!!
*crustacean
Thx for that
I keep coming back to this video because while he's talking about the sapphire crayfish you can see in his eyes the pure joy and delight that he has for what he does. Every second that he spends on camera with a subject you can just tell he's in heaven and living the best of it. We honestly need more people like him in the world. People who have a natural love for nature and the wildlife.
Never knew these were rare. My son used to catch these all the time from a stream that went behind our apartment in Arvada Colorado. We only got water in it when the snow melted up in the Rockies or it rained. We never ate them because we lived in a suburb of Denver.
All he used to catch and release them was a couple Gatorade bottles baited with bologna or raw bacon.
"You can flip rocks for hours and come across nothing, but that's what makes it fun. Because there's always gonna be another rock and all it takes is flipping the right rock to find a jewel"
That's a motivational quote right there. In the woods and in life
sounds like gambling right there
you circle around bush for hours and miss your pokemon, but thats what makes it fun.
Because there's always gonna be another bush and all it takes is pass in the right bush to find a shiny.
Every pokemon player who want a shiny.
❤
Smash The Matriarchy way to ruin the mood :/
Peyote it's always nice to see some unique animals thanks for sharing the video!!🙂🦝👍✌👋🦂 I know this is a scorpion but you got to use your imagination when it comes to emojis because they don't give you unable to give you everything so this is supposed to represent a crayfish and it's not blue but you'll have to do. Be brave stay Wild!!
This man gets hurt many times and still teaches us about wildlife
Very brave
Hahah
I caught one of these a couple of years ago and was shocked of how cool it was
Wow... I’m in WV and I never saw these creatures before. I am very impressed.
I think sapphire crayfish is a great name!
No, silver fish.
@franceskinskij craw. Fish.
lol your name, commenting about a sapphire crayfish
Crawfish***
Yep
Weird, about 23 years ago I fished out a blue crayfish out of a pond in Ontario, Canada. Wonder if it's of the same subspecies.
I had a white crayfish for almost two years and he passed two days ago :( I’ve owned only white crays, but I’ve been thinking of getting a blue one because they’re just so cute and this video just supported that cause. I must get a blue. The cutest. ✨😭
Coyote: It’s a blue crayfish
Mark: is it blue?
Coyote: 👁👄👁
Those have always been around here in WV. We see them quite often.
Wow! That is so amazing to find a RARE blue crayfish! GOOD CATCH COYOTE!!! 😁👍
Have you ever seen a blue-spotted salamander? They're very rare and they're very pretty, dark grey-black with extremely bright blue spots; they're one of my favorites, the other being a cave salamander :3
This is gonna sound unbelievable but I went fishing when I was 7 (now 15) and found a blue crayfish. Being young I thought it was a blue baby lobster. And we didn’t think that it was new, it was just rare. Moral of the story, I discovered it.
Their not even rare you can litterly buy them at pet stores I have 3 crawfish a blue one and white one and a purple one . They seriously are not rare you can buy them for 20$
Just imagine if he dident lift that big rock over imagine how long it would take him to find another one XD
I’ve had one of these before, it’s name was “Big Blue” it had it’s own little tank of water I found it at Petsmart
Do you people know how lucky Coyote is to be catching these rare animals!? Specialists have been trying to catch the blue krayfish for 3 YEARS now and coyote just took a few hours!
@sjydudeCielno1
If the one in this video is called Cambarus monongalensis, then it is not new at all. Cambarus monongalensis was first documented in 1905 by A. E. Ortman, who worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pennsylvania. See new December 2018 post giving more information.
Morgan McCleery ur talkin about a different species buddy. they’re common all over and especially in florida. the one that’s rare only discovered 3 years ago is called
Cambarus monongalensis and can only b found in the virginias and pennsylvania
dragutin radosavljevic it's cause Coyote's a pro
Then again it is a shiny Pokémon so no surprise it's hard to find. And he should have catcher with his poke balls
Blue crawfish are literally nothing special. You can buy them for about 15 bucks at any pet store
I was tripping when I caught one of these two days ago. They ate way faster than the red lol
They have blue crayfish in oregon too! So beautiful
My luckiest find was finding my dad at the store actually getting milk
oh my god
Damn your dad actually found the milk?!! Such a legend
I found one of these while I was in 9th grade about 4 years ago, I still have the video of it. I took a video because I had never seen a blue one before and I thought it was amazing.
So, let me get this straight, Coyote has been stung by a bullet ant, a lion-fish, a tarantula hawk, and scorpions. Then, he wrangled an alligator and let it bit him, and has wrangled countless other animals. After that, he let a damn alligator snapping turtle bite his arm. Now, he's discovered a new sub-species of crayfish?! Guys, let's just take a moment to realize how badass Coyote really is.
Edit: Also, don't forget the time he stuffed his hands in an ant hill. Thank you all for the likes, it means a lot to me :D.
Edit: A lot of you have been saying that I spelt "strait" wrong, so I fixed it folks!
Desi G noice
He didn't discover anything new...
Desi G the next steve Irwin
Desi G I
I'm the pug why does it matter if Coyote has more videos than him
was fishing in Kentucky back in 2010. saw a blue one walking along near the bank. didnt realize it was even rare.
Good day to you, Brave Wilderness Team. Is there any update on the Sapphire Crayfish? I must admit I am quite curious, how this turned out.
I wonder if the blue crayfish would turn red if cooked too. It’s so odd how crustaceans all turn red after cooking
I found one today lol. It's the first one I've seen that's totally blue. I also live in WV.
Keep us updated on the name coyote. I'd love to know whether they classify it as a sapphire crayfish or not. I love the name btw.
GamingWithBosscat 04 it’s rare to find someone with a ghost profile pic. So no don’t change it.
Camron Mozaffari Thats what I'm saying. I think it's a beautiful creature.
Change your profile pic if you want respect from anyone 😑
He likes hiking man I love it, when I go hiking after half an hour I’m like ahhh I’m tired and he goes for ever: PROVES HE DOES ANYTHING FOR US AND YT
The name you gave it was so pretty. I love it so much.
I really wanna be like coyote someday. But I’m too scared to touch anything. Especially things like those, and tarantulas etc, but I hope people who wanna be like him too will be successful or anyone who has a dream! Good luck everyone ✨❤️
Love how he puts them back. Also love how he doesn’t get mad at insects and Mother Nature doing what they naturally do.
I like how he doesn't have a INclips red series, it really makes us poor people feel special
true
DoggieDingo Gamer jeez dont get butthurt
Derek Cisneros if he starts a INclips red channel I'll have to throw myself off a bridge

Derek Cisneros 800th like
It is an awesome creature and the blue crayfish may be the most exotic creature I have ever seen!!!
Awww crayfish are so cute with their lil pinchers and wavy feely tentacles
It (Cambarus loughmani) has officially been named after the biologist who has done the most in describing it, Zac Loughman. The common name "Blue Teays Mudbug", is descriptive of the river valley where it is found.
Just moved to WV, and this is my first Spring here. I was looking up fishing and foraging opportunities near me, and I happened upon info on the blue crayfish.
Really cool!
No, I won't be foraging for blues, but the info is cool.
These blue cray fishes are their in my village,I catch these fishes often when I go to the village in river in my village in the India in andhra pradesh
I never seen A blue crayfish before BUT this is my first time to see a rare animal.Btw I love this channel because its way more better than Animal planet 😂
Be Brave & Stay Wild 🐾
1. Slimy Salamander
2. Brook Crayfish
3. Blue Crayfish
I had a pet crayfish when I was a kid. Kept him in a large aquarium. I must have been nine or ten years old at the most. He didn't do much in his tank when I watched, but I'm pretty sure he attacked one of my fish when I wasn't watching, since I came home from school one day and one of my fish was missing part of its ventral fin was all cut up.
It's so weird finding crayfish in the middle of the woods
Cute. Though I do wonder if she is truly wild or someone's released pet.
Hunting for rare shiny Pokémon
😂
@SuperiorLobster 888 I do to I hate Pokémon
Lol yea
Breh
@Emi Playz yes
I love to find crayfish in my village I do it most non school days. No blue ones but we have found a 20cm by10cm crayfish before so that was cool.
Hey I’ve found those in my yard! Blue ones coming out of the creek in front of my house. I live in southern WV
i have found blue crayfish in a local river @Brave Wilderness they are somewhat rare 1 in 10 probably the ones i found are a much larger size as well. if you want to look for them hit me up =D
I had a blue crayfish as pet a long time ago so this seems pretty normal to me
Cyote: gets hand chomped off by a alligator
Mark: "did it get ya"
Uh dead meme
Lol
😂 lol
An*
Cyote?
We have these all over our farm. I remember finding them when I was little and wondering why they were so blue!
@Angela Woods We are in Milton, West Virginia.
Were are you at?
That’s really interesting,
Kinda cool how blue and almost translucent they are.
My buddy had a blue crayfish in his aquarium, little bugger was an escape artist. We would be having coffee in his kitchen and hear clicking on the floor, looking down to find a small blue escapee making his way across the kitchen floor... Always entertaining. :)
woooooow ! that's amazing !but how can the salamander breath through its skin? I mean I learnt in biology that breathing though skin only is only possble for very small organisms because of Fick's law of diffusion... Aside from that almost all species can breathe through their skin but it can't really be taken into account...
We catch them in Louisiana pretty often during crawfish season. Super cool creatures.
One of the only channels that doesn't use clickbait. I love this channel!
Leland Blas ok but that doesn't count lol😂. And he wrote it in the title so it technically wasn't clickbait. Also it was a video specifically made TO celebrate never clickbaiting :)
TWICE's pet hamster he clicked bait once
Andrew Westerholm true
TWICE's pet hamster He doesn't need to. He's obviously got a higher budget than clickbaiters do to make high quality videos. This channel's purpose is not just to entertain, but also to inform and educate. Clickbait cannot do those last two things (or even the first sometimes). Besides, he wouldn't be able to make these kinds of discoveries official if he was using clickbait.
I actually found one of these in my woods which made me come back to this video years later hahahah
I’m actually from WV and I’ve never seen one of those. Very cool
Wow this is amazing because my family as a blue crayfish as a pet and hes amazing. His (or her) we named it Blau.
Awesome find guys.
HOLY SHHHHH- I've heard so much about this species. I at times thought it was a Myth/Photoshoped blue/Extinct. you don't understand how excited I am about this episode. good find Coyote!
I know Nobody cares but I'm currently Studying into a medical degree so I can become a veterinarian in Australia Zoo~!
EDIT: I just found out that a Blue LOBSTER exists! *Squee*
Anyone know possibly how it ended up there. West Virginia mountain creyfish that blows my mind. I guess ocean thousands of years ago?
KlockworXMusic yea i don’t know why it’s so hard to understand that he found a new subspecies and the ones ur talking about r completely different. it’s like looking at a common black house spider and thinking it’s black widow. there are notable diffferences
Professor Quirrel I’m trying to work at Aussie zoo as well, I LOVE TORTOISES
Professor Quirrel Paik
+Darren Lin stop making fun of him
Never thought I would see a shiny crayfish
If anyone is just now seeing this video one time I went hand fishing for them and I caught a powder blue one it wasn’t a dark blue like this but it was still really cool and he was my pet for like a year I released him a bit ago I hope he is okay
Who else is living vicariously though coyotes videos lol
And he really did discover a new specie ! Wow how cool is that?
Congratulations you found a shiny crayfish
Captain Deadpool USE TAKE DOWN!

From the small pond behind my house, I can catch hundreds of the Bright Blue crayfish in about an hour.. there's also bright red ones that come out of the same pond..
Blue crawfish are very rare.. where do you live Lmao...
7:32 thats giving her so much credit...those things loose their claws by literally just going around
I found one when I was a kid on my parents farm in WV Where I grew up and it was a large one about 6" long.
I used to catch crawfish when I was young. Ive seen many blue crawfish they are indeed rare to find though. Rare as in one in every few hundred. but not so rare where youd only find one in your lifetime type of thing.
West Virginia is my home state, I've been catching cray fish since I was a kid and I've never came across a blue one. I'm really going to be looking now 😊
Jacob Foe, I just drove through Durbin last week lol I'm about 2-3 hours away from there. I live in Harrison county. But thanks, I hope I find one too lol
Thank you Melody Wildblade
louanna glasscock West Virginia is my home state too I actually live right below Durbin lol and I've only ever seen 1 didn't catch it though lol so I hope you can find one lol
louanna glasscock I hope you find it! Good luck
I seen a blue crawfish in a lake in New York State and it was huge like 5-6 inches long I couldn’t believe what I was seeing especially because of its size almost lobster size! That was 10 years ago and I never seen one before or after!
I was born and raised in Southern WV and I have never seen a blue crawdad before.
Coyote: woah a blue crayfish
Pokemon Players: Oh a shiny!!!
Lol
obviously shiny corphish is pink not blue
@NeoTheAnimator wat
ikr
Yup
This guy's like the Steve Irwin of crayfish.
"TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE MASSIVE PINCHERS!"
I'm scared to pick up a worm and this guy is over there picking up deadly things every video 😂
Thanks it goes with my name
Jireh Munoz Luv ur profile pic
But they pinch HARD but I use them for bait
No
Fisherman Hunter I know
You’ve been to WV quite a bit. I live about 30 min from Durbin. There’s no other place on earth I’d rather call home. Montani Semper Liberi. Have you ever done a video on the Cheat Mountain Salamander? I think they are exclusive to this area.
I have a location in South Florida, very remote and there are blue crayfish that are much larger. Can't find any info on the species and I am wondering if it is a new one. Not many people know they are there, there is alot of flowing everglades water and people normally just trap in the water and get the red ones
Thats actually really cool. Its so blue!
I had no idea it was rare I found one once
Who else thought this was clickbait because of how vibrant blue the crayfish was?! 😂 But it's an absolutely beautiful creature! :)
Taylor Prichard me 😂
One they have clickbaited once but in good spirit and its a supposedly rare sub species thats slightly different maybe
Taylor Prichard I think coyote said he was done with the clickbait and that it was only for that one video where he announced his book. but the crawfish was really beautiful 💙
Taylor Prichard sort of is clickbait the crayfish isnt even that rare its a sub species not new at all
Brace wilderness never clickbaits
My grandfather used to farm crawfish when I was a little kid and had a few blue ones. My cousin even went on tv with one to show it off.
That salamander was adorable!!
one question: how do you differentiate a male crayfish or female crayfish?
Coyote:wow a blue crayfish
Mark:is it blue
Me:no its green
The climax of when he finds the animal is hilarious everytime.
"HOOOOLY MACKEROLE!"
Savannah Pfierman I thought he said holy afro 😂
I love it so nice you should explore more because its AMAZING!🤩🤩I love you! I also love your Amazing Adventure 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Coyote: "Holy Mackeral!"
Me: No thats a Crayfish.
@Philip Tucker Its has a different name in other countries 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
No, that’s a CRAWFISH 🤦🏼♂️
@N copier
@Astro 😐
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂... 😐
Flashbacks to when he was hunting pokemon, now he got a shiny :)
coyote: *literally can touch any animal in existence and not be scared*
me: *can't even touch a single worm*
@Tronus birds are touched with the freedom of soft thinking
I've picked up many worms in my life-
Ikr, my little brother found a baby bird on the ground and picked it up and I was so scared to touch it cause I didn’t want to hurt it 🌝
Me: *gets 50 feet near a bee*. Also me: ima head out
Try a married worm
Coyote flips over a rock, and sees a slimy salamander...
Coyote: Oh jeez! * *rushes to grab it* *
Me: Oh jeez! * *sprints away* *
How come no one has made this comment yet?
They only pinch in order to defend themselves or, when handling them, to keep their balance. When pinched, hold your hand steady and it will let go.
_gets pinched by a crustacean_
Me: *"Ow!"* _panics and shakes it off_
Coyote: "I appreciate that, little buddy."
In West Virginia we call them Crawdads. idk why but I caught them all the time growing up near Cheat River.
I’m watching this 3 years after it was posted. Any news on whether this is a new sub species? And the name if so?
I like to think that the blue crayfish lifted that heavy rock itself to hide under
Since its blue, would it turn a different color if you cooked it than a regular crawfish?
