It's always a treat when we get a Mark video, but I'm digging seeing Hunter again. As a biology nerd when I'm not at work as a veterinarian, I absolutely love that you're getting an ecologist involved, and he explains everything in an easy to understand way for people who don't have a biol background. I could happily listen to Hunter (and Mark) talk all day.
Also, congrats to you guys for getting published! I was so excited to see that on socials. When I have some proper spare time I'll be reading that paper, and sharing it with my biol/ecology colleagues.

@Casper Ghost You are wrong. Parasites by definition do not harm the host. You are mistaking a parasite for a parasitic relationship. Those are not the same thing. Parasites can form positive relationships and negative relationships with the host. They often form parasitic relationships, hence the name. But that isn't a requirement at all.

    • Helena Volckaert
      Helena Volckaert 2 महीने पहले +1

@Xavier Bean Nah, those cuties are tardigrades (adorable "moss piglets" that eat tiny algae and plant cells and hang out in wet moss or water droplets). The critters in this video are the symbiotic facial mites that help keep our skin clean by eating dead skin cells and detritus, like a tiny cleanup crew.

    • Xavier Bean

@Casper Ghost i forgot what they are called scientifically, but aren't they called water bears?

    • Casper Ghost
      Casper Ghost 2 महीने पहले +16

They aren't parasites. Parasites by definition have to harm the host; mites are symbiotic since they eat the dead skin that we all produce and have no negative effects. They're quite helpful actually so this is really just clickbait.

    • Loser take the bait
      Loser take the bait 2 महीने पहले +1

@Colobolo I think you're mistaken. A parasitic relationship is always negative, but not all parasites form parasitic relationships. A parasite can actually benefit from commensalism and still be a parasite by definition. The dictionary definition of the word parasite is an organism that requires resources from another organism to survive. They often have no benefit to the host or actively harm the host. However, that part isn't a requirement. Some parasites can in fact be beneficial and still be parasites. We just typically don't think of anything that is a parasite as positive. That's a problem with human rationalization though, not with the choice of words.

    • Colobolo
      Colobolo 2 महीने पहले +3

@Lyra BloodWolf Parasitic relationships are always negative on the host. What you are thinking about is commensalism.

    • Lyra BloodWolf
      Lyra BloodWolf 2 महीने पहले +3

Parasites don’t necessarily mean there’s a negative affect due to their presence. Parasites are merely organisms that require a host to survive. There are many cases where a host and parasite have a symbiotic relationship where they both benefit from each other.

Hey coyote. I know this video isn’t about scorpions. But what if a scorpion tries to sting something, but missed and stung it’s back?

As much as I can't stand insects, these things are oddly cute. Those stubby little legs might be it. When there are bugs that could be on my face that could kill me, I'm okay with this one.

Well thank you for making my fear of germs parasites diseases etc. in combination with my ocd adhd autism sensory integration etc. evolve into something brand spanking new. I think I need to go back to my therapist and tell them we got a whole new bag of issues we can forget touching dirty trash cans filled to the brim with diseased ridden parasites for a while
Edit: after watching the full vid I feel a little better now and im sorry for the outburst I have a huge fear of parasites plz forgive me brave wilderness and comment section
